What LSD fluid do you use for your street ti?

As the title says, what LSD fluid are you using in your street ti? I was lucky enough to pick up a small case 3.45 LSD from Dan and will plan to install it this weekend. I looked through various threads, but there was no clear answer other than fluid weight. I figure our responses can help other folks with similar questions in the future.

I see 75-140w for LSDs, although a 75-110w is used by some folks to keep heat down. 75-90w seems to be the spec for non-LSDs, although some folks are using it in their LSDs without apparent issues.

Dan mentioned he used Redline, which I have used in my non-LSD diffs. Not sure if a LSD modifier needs to be added to Redline.

What do you use? Whatever you use, do you hear any difference when you are driving? I ask as I tried Royal Purple when I could not find any Redline at one point in another non-LSD BMW and I experienced a whine when underway. Not sure if was due to the fluid change or if the properties were different than the BMW fluid. I went back to BMW fluid and the whine went away. Never was really sure what went on there.

Also, can you mention if you are running a LSD or a Torsen diff and if a LSD, is it a small case 3.45 or a E30 or other variant?

Anyway, thanks for your feedback! Rich

I'm using Redline 75W90 in the LSD on my '95, according to bavauto.com it has the friction modifier already in it

mine whines a bit but it hasn't ever gotten worse

Thanks! Are you running a LSD or a Torsen diff?

Jonathan at bimmerdiffs has stated that redline "shockproof" fluid causes LSD failures. Not sure what fails but he has mentioned that in other threads.

I've mostly used Mobil 1 and amsoil both have held up well at ~20k mile oil change intervals. 75w-110 is what I've been using in the Ti with small case LSD.

Hi Dave! Yes I read the same threads for Redline "shockproof" which caught my attention. I wondered about the use of 75-90w for our LSDs.

there is a speed shop in town I'll head over to later this week and they carry Redline, Royal Purple, Valvoline and a few others where I can read the labels. Old school... :)

I'll open up the case hopefully this evening and inspect the inside.

Thanks again for all responses thus far.

For those of you who mentioned you were using Redline for your duffs, were you using the GL-5 gear oil, or the Heavy Shockproof gear oil?

Thanks! 😎
