Factory M3 Compact

I knew there was one, had no idea there are two.

Two M3 versions of the 3-series compact (the body style sold here as the 318ti) were built: one with the 282-hp, 3.0-liter engine, and one with the 317-hp, 3.2-liter engine. BMW studied bringing this car to market carefully, finally deciding not to. The idea now lives with the 1-series M Coupe.

The way they were meant to be imo. I love the dual exhaust!!

I wonder the reasons they decided against it.

Haha! If they did, it would be #7 for me! Nice...

The exhaust does look pretty cool. It looks like there is a little bit of a dovetail on it too. I have a feeling that it wasn't built because it would of competed closely with the flagship m3, in terms of performance. As we all know it's quite simple to swap in an S50/S52. From what I can remember the 95 M3 had a base price around $37 with the Ti at $19. What they would charge for an M Ti is anyone's guess but too much and it wouldn't sell, too little and it would take away from M3 sales. Thankfully it's easy for us to be able to realize and build the dream

Makes a lot sense. And yes, I believe building a dream is better than buying one 😅 unless that dream is a GT3

What are those wheels on that m3 Compact?

Factory LTW's, originally found on the M3 LTW's

Platanos 01-31-2015 09:48 PM

Those are Style 24 or "LTW" wheels. They were originally made for the 1995 LTW M3 but those would have been stamped BMW Motorsports on the wheel.

Platanos 01-31-2015 09:49 PM

lol, what he said ^

Definitely one of the nicest set of wheels that i have ever seen on a 318ti. I'll have to hunt some down

The markup wasn't that much to begin with. They would have had to do pass DOT and TUV standards.
Doesn't make much sense since they built an E36 M Roadster.

Hmm, but it would be an M3. They already built three versions (coupe, sedan, convertible) without worrying about them competing.

I bet it would have sold reasonably well in Europe considering the success of the standard Compact. In the United States, definitely not.

Compacts did well in Europe, including the E46.
Better than tourings but that doesn't stop BMW AG from making them.

The compact was designed to get younger buyers into a BMW for less money. It was not designed with a major sporting nature, hence the hodge podge suspension.

Don't get me wrong I would have bought one if they had made it. At present time I am looking for a Z3/4 M coupe. Would prefer a Z4M but they are very few and far between.

Wasn't it because they simply couldn't fit the standard E36 suspension in the shortened rear? The Z3M's use the same design, and they have a very serious sporting nature.
