m50b25 swap Q and A

Reeto
I’m new to bmw world, after driving my compact for a while I feel it could do with more power, so I’ve decided to go turbo with the m50 - but first the engine swap
Before I start it I’ve got a couple of questions that I couldn’t find an answer online to

1) Is my V reg (1999) compact obd1 or obd2 (obd2 i think)
2) This is the engine I’m looking at buying will this be obd1 or obd2 (obd1 i think)
http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?n...topic&t=236417
3) If they are different obd1/2 how hard is it to wire the engine to the car
4) Is there anything else I’ll need that not listed in the sale (clock’s ews unit key and chip)

I’ve never done a bmw engine swap before so any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance

This has been done many times. Several years ago the best way to get more power out of the S52 was to convert it to OBD1 and tune it.

This article is written about converting an OBD2 S52 (M3) to OBD1, but the same principles would apply in your case. That is an OBD1 engine in OBD2 chassis.

318ti engine swap

I'm new to bmw's but recently acquired a 1998 318ti and I want to do a motor swap. Now I want a 6 cylinder so I'm thinking M52 or S52 (Idk the difference). But also my car is automatic and I want to convert to manual. Now just curious what all parts would I need to make this happen? i.e. Exhaust, headers, flywheel, what transmission. etc. Please take it easy I'm a newbie! I appreciate all help!

Thank you. I'll hop to it!

BTW,, the difference between the M52 and S52 is horsepower... and overall strength. THe S52 is the eM3 engine..

would i be better off getting a obd2 m52b28 if so what years (trying to keep the wiring as simple as i can)

Thanks. My biggest question is what engine would be best for my 318ti? Along with the manual transmission conversion? I'm not trying to spend a ridiculous amount of money. Also what does the old or what ever it's called mean?? Sorry like I said I'm new to bmw's and haven't found much so far to elaborate on these things.

Short answer - absolutely!
I suggest you look around the engine swap section. This subject has been discussed in great length and all the information you need to answer your question is there.

On Board Diagnostic <revision>

OBD1 was ramped in from the early 90's..
OBDII mandatory in the US from 1996 onward.
OBDIII Currently in deployment in high horsepower to weight vehicles.

In the US to keep the car 100% legal the motor has to be same year or newer as the car chassis.. It is a federal offense, albeit seldom enforced to put a OBDI engine in a OBDII car, and if you sell it, the buyer can jack you up any time they want and get their money back no matter how "as is" the sale is. Its not possible to completely sign away a federal legal requirement.

Not a layer just a guy who's watched enough friends go down in flames in small claims court to be paranoid..
