Overheating issue
 

Engine ('96, M44) is overheating. The fan does not come on and my heat does not work (which is very unfortunate, considering it's going to be about 30-40 degrees the rest of the week).

I believe it's a thermostat issue, but not sure if there's another common problem that I don't know of. Also, if it is a thermostat problem how much do they usually cost and how much work does it take to replace?

I've had the car since August and the only other issue I've had is a small oil leak, which, I think, is coming from the oil pan. It's a very small leak and I haven't put my car on a lift to check it out, just add about an oz. of oil every month.

On a side note, I might just take it to the mechanic and get all the fluids replaced, and this fixed. I'm about due for an oil change/coolant change/transmission/diff, etc.

So the engine overheating and the fan not coming on is because of an air bubble in the radiator/engine?

Most likely. Also, chances are, the temp sensor got fried from no coolant flowing past it, which in turn would keep the fan from coming on. FWIW, you should be able to get the fan to kick on by turning the A/C on. If it doesn't, then something else is wrong.

I'll get some some coolant tomorrow, and drain, replace, and bleed it. But I couldn't get the fan to turn on by messing with the heat/AC..

The fan has two speeds. Low speed is triggered by the temp switch, high speed is tiggered by the A/C switch.
