A/C wont start - checked _everything_!!

Fellow TI-Owners,

it's been a while since my A/C got some special treatment  as i wrote
"...my a/c stopped working the other day. Couple of frustrating tasks later i figured the fuse to be killed - worked with a replacement for a couple of weeks (i bought an automatic one, then ;-) ). Sadly, it jumped nearly every day the last months, not bothering me during the heavy bavarian winter...
After i figured that it was a spark going from the connector of the clutch at the pump i tried to check on this one, but guess what it was, after weeks of wondering and frustration? The cable going from the connector to the clutch, around a sharp edgy part of the pump. Everytime it touched the sharp metal of the pumps frame, it did a spark and killed the fuse. This cable is quite tiny and on the surface of the pump. You can see it when looking in from the top of the engine bay."

Well, a couple of days ago it suddenly did not cool anymore. Checking on it not being the same issue again: all fuses are okay, the fan is running, lights in dash are lit, car is warm, not too cold, since today it's completely serviced with a new cooling liquid r134a filling (160 grams to few of cooling stuff in it) so it is not leaking or so, but it won't start the compressor... Damn, can anybody help?:frown: This one really sucks.

TIA!

Well, after checking all relais and electrical wiring i know there will be a new magnetic clutch

I'll update you on all progress cc. this; as we have winter coming up i am not to keen on getting it done asap. Anyways, i will check prices of garages as this one seems to be a tough DIY.

I would get it done quickly. You kind of need the AC to defog/defrost effectively.

yeah, man.... already negotiating what to do exactly and how much to spend. will have trip to the garage next week for some good engineers to talk on the magnetic clutch swap. bmw got em so procurement is easy. just don't know wether only to swap the clutch or the whole compressor... damn

Try the clutch first. That was the issue on mine. After going through the crazy wire diagram and checking polarity on every wire I accidently hit the pulley with a wrench and it engaged and started working. After I used some wd-40 and repeatedly turning the a/c on and off my clutch engages and dis-engages fine now. Although it will need to be replaced soon. Just a suggestion, hopefully it works out for you.

Kenny, thanks for your reassurance.... guess i will try to get someone to swap the clutch first as the compressor and coolant lines is verified OK. It's getting winter here so i got some time to live with that 'till next year!
