DME Compatibility on M42

Hi,
Sorry if this post is going out twice. I thought I hit "Submit New Thread" but I haven't seen it show up. I'm assessing my options of getting a used DME 1.7 for my '95 ti automatic. My (factory original) suspect part is Bosch PN 0 261 203 282. I see from the Bosch list of DME part numbers and BMW year/engine PN 0 261 203 357 has also been used on '95 tis. My question is "Can these two be swapped? Or does a 0 261 203 282 have to be replaced with a 0 261 203 282?"

Thanks,
Charlie

EWS is different between the two different DMEs. As far as engine control and all of that goes, there should not be an issue using the different DME, but your other relays and controls, like the EWS unit, will not just take the swap and work. There have been people on here that have made the M44 OBDII DME work on an M42, so it is possible to make it work, but it will probably be more than just a plug-n-play situation.

Thanks! I don't want to fuss with the EWS, so I'll just have to track down another 0 261 203 282.

Turns out I don't need a new DME. My error code 1286 problem (and a raft of other error codes) was not due to a flaky DME. It was due to intermittent misfire from old spark plug wires.
