328 Engine Swap Complete

Put a 328 into my Compact last weekend - donor car was a 328 Coupe, I dropped the whole front end of the Coupe and fitted it straight to the Compact - easiest conversion ever!

All I need to do now is swap the clocks and run a wire from the clocks to the ECU to stop it revving at 5500rpm

Haha nice I like how you did that!

Grats man!

Did you use an engine crane at all?

GrandpaTuner 05-15-2012 05:38 AM

Wow....Nice

Nope - the front end of the Coupe was off so the car was jacked up on to axle stands and the engine lowered down on to a trolley jack/dolly and dragged over to the Compact.

We had the Compact up on axle stands and then lifted it a few more inches by hand/shoulders in the arch's high enough to get the old engine out underneath & then did the same but in reverse to put the 2.8 in using the trolley/dolly t

if you haven't already, swap out the 318 instrument cluster for the 328 cluster, that should correct the RPM reading

On the 'To do' list for this weekend

Also needing to run a wire from the clocks to the ECU to stop it revving it at 5500rpm

I don't recall having that issue

Markos_46 05-22-2012 11:37 AM

Seems to be a fairly common issue as the ECU isn't receiving a signal from the speed sensor which was on the donor cars diff so it goes into a limp mode, stopping the engine from revving past something like 5100 rpm - all fixed now though, clocks in and revving to the redline.

Right hand drive ? I see the booster on the left of the engine bay .

Yep - I'm in the Uk.

What did you disconnect/remove to lower the guts like you did?

are you using the original transmission or did you take that for the 328 as well?

Same question for rear differential and axle shafts.

From memory disconnected:

ARB mountings
Lower arms from body
engine wiring loom
Top mounts
Radiator/coolant pipes

Basically anything that was connecting the engine to the body.

Using the 328 gearbox & front half of the prop, this fitted directly to the 318 prop - using the 318Ti diff and shafts.

That an Aluminium M52? If so the car is probably pretty close to original weight. Are you relocating the battery to the rear?

Markos_46 07-20-2012 03:01 PM

Yep aluminium M52 - battery is staying where it is, I've got an E36 M3 track/race car too - this was just done for a bit of fun and is my daily/shopping car
