ID that part thread So, I've been seeing a lot of "ID that part" or "what part is it?" type of threads lately. Well I have the idea of why not just have a thread didicated to it... The site that can be easily used to find parts is www.realoem.com However, there are those times when you may have a problem identifying a part or part number or even finding where it goes. Well if you are having problems just post here and one the members will surely help out. I mean, thats what we guys/gals do on the org, we help each other out. Anyway, I even have a question. does anyone know what part number or which part it is for the underpanel under the steering wheel in the euro 318ti? It has a spot or hold and i want it to store my sunglasses there when i park. |

Anyway, the part# you're looking for is 51458185748 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref....=on&showeur=on |
So, I found a picture of the cubby Marv was talking about and it is freaking awesome. I took a few part numbers to the dealer and he couldn't get any of them to show up. Bummer, I'd love to have that in my car too. It looks like the european version doesn't have the knee bolster the US car has, I'm guessing thats why we don't have the cubby stock. |

Looking for a passenger side control armin good condition. PM me if you have one. |
Did you actually get one from Tischer? |
So is the part (#4) a direct replacement for the piece in a USA ti? The RHD E46s have a similar compartment, but it won't work in the USA car. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/x/n/6.png 04 - TRIM PANEL LOWER LEFT ANTHRAZIT 51-45-8-185-748 |
I don't think so, the US ti has a knee bolster (part # 21) At the very least I think that would have to be removed. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...62&hg=51&fg=30 |
It appears #21 isn't used on the RHD car - I thought perhaps #4 could go in its place. |
21 is behind number 4. |

not yet. i'm seeing what other parts i need to order so i can do a bundle order. You going to get it? |
I'd like to, but I'm not crazy about removing the knee bolster, just in case I ever got in an accident. |
Ok, I just realized I ordered the wrong part (bolt). What I need is the 2 bolts that attach the bracket for the oil pick-up tube to the crank thing. I think they are called main rod bolts??? The bracket is number 14. I ordered 15 and 13 but the ones on the top of bracket are the ones I got incorrect. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/b/w/24.png I thought it was number 4 in this pic. but its not the right ones http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/b/z/1.png |
THIS THREAD NEEDS TO BE STICKIED!!!! |
Bump, I need to order this ASAP. Any help? |
Is that for your S52? |
Fernando, that second illustration is a piston rod. Those move up and down with the crankshaft. The oil pick up would have to be bolted to something stationary. I currently have my oil pan removed, so I went out to look, but the view is obstructed by the oil baffle. I'm in my PJ's right now and didn't want to get greasy(3:30am), I'll try to get a better look later. For now, here's a couple pics and just to clarify, we're talking about the two bolts I colored in red correct? http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...i/redbolts.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...i/CIMG5157.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...i/CIMG5162.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...i/CIMG5160.jpg |
BTW, these pics are of my S52. |
Yes this would be for a s52. Jess, the red bolts are the ones I need, except you drew them upside down..lol I think they are 16 mm bolts (just a guess). I was told they are one time use bolts....I should have taken a pic when I was at home. I'll snag one tonight. |
I need this PN.....Why is it so hard to find:help: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...g?t=1305668970 http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...g?t=1305668970 |
Yeah it's definitely odd that realoem doesn't have them listed. I can't even find the part that the bracket attaches to. You could see the piston rod right next to it, it's attached to the crankshaft with torx bolts. If you look at the heads of the bolts, you should see either an 8 or a 10. This indicates whether the bolt is grade 8 or grade 10 steel. It's hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like a 10 on the lower bolt. Anyway, locally I have a place called "Industrial Bolt" where I go when I need miscelaneous or otherwise specialty hardware. Perhaps you have a similar place locally, or you could try your local auto parts store. For this application, I'd make certain that the specifications are identical ie; bolt grade, shank length, thread length etc. Of course, your other option would be to try the dealership. Sorry man, wish I could offer more help. |
Yeah bro, I have no idea what's up with that. I'm going to take the bolt and bracket to the dealer, hopefully they will get the right bolt. Think it would be safe to reuse the bolts? |
If the manual says it's a 1 time use bolt, I wouldn't reuse it. The poblem with those shanked bolts, if they're over torqued, they tend to stretch/twist right where the shank meets the threads. Take a really close look at those threads, if they look distorted in any way, I'd replace them. |
Does anyone know the part number for this little plastic piece that clips in to the intake? Mine broke the other day and I cannot figure it out on realoem! This is on a m44 btw. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6004/...ee760b41_z.jpg |

1 Attachment(s) OK lets see if we can ID this part - see attached picture (your looking forward). Its a bracket attached to the transmission (M42 engine) forward of the cast transmission cross member. I can't find anything on realOEM but I may not be looking in the right place. You can see it has one rubber isolator mount on it (and a place for a second). What is this for?? Underbody panel maybe? But in that case it would seem you would want to mount to the cast cross member not the transmission which would vibrate etc. Thanks Paul |
Its an exhaust vibration damper. There are a few parts you're missing. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...48&hg=18&fg=30 |
Thanks Dave - did not think to look at the exhaust section as its off to the side of the bracket. Add those to a list for the next time I order some parts. paul |

I have a 1997 m44 |
Can someone ID this part? 2 Attachment(s) I have not owned my 318ti very long. While doing a brake job I spotted this thing laying on the bumper in the right front of the engine bay. When hung on the bracket it nearly touches what appears to be the AC dryer. I thought it was the horn but after looking up 318ti horns for sale they did not look like this. I have not triggered the alarm system but maybe it is a siren for that? Charlie D. |

1 Attachment(s) I recently picked up a ti and have been busy doing the great DIYs on the site (cooling system including the plastic connectors, oil filter housing, valve cover gasket, etc). I'm finally putting the car back together and found this guy on the ground under the car -- I believe it came off while I was re-attaching all the cabin air filter parts and think it attaches to the firewall somewhere, but I've yet to find where it came from. Any ideas? |
I believe that's the windshield cowl drain. My mechanic actually recommended removing them completely after mine became brittle and stuck closed. It would back up and soak the passenger footwell inside when it rained. |
